Protecting people, communities, and the environment
At Sibanye-Stillwater Recycling operations, the health and safety of our employees and visitors, and the protection of the environment are our highest priorities. Recycling precious metal–bearing materials involves inherent risks, and we take full responsibility for managing those risks through rigorous Quality, Environmental, Health & Safety (QEHS) programs.
Our commitment to QEHS is embedded in every aspect of our operations, from material intake to final refining.

Why QEHS matters in precious metal recycling
Precious metal recycling often involves complex materials, hazardous chemicals, and high-temperature processes. Without robust safety and environmental controls, these operations can pose risks to people, facilities, and surrounding communities.
Partnering with Sibanye-Stillwater Recycling operations ensures:
- Protection of employee health and workplace safety
- Full compliance with environmental and safety regulations
- Reduced liability and operational risk
- Responsible, sustainable recycling practices
Regulatory compliance and oversight
Our environmental, health and safety (EHS) manager conducts regular inspections of the refinery to ensure full compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing precious metal recycling operations.
The QEHS manager is on-site during business hours and is available to speak directly with customers and suppliers who may have questions regarding:
- Environmental controls
- Safety procedures
- Regulatory compliance
- Waste handling and documentation
Environmental controls and emissions management
Precious metals are often embedded in durable or hazardous materials, requiring carefully engineered controls to protect both employees and the environment. To address these challenges, Sibanye-Stillwater Recycling operations has made significant investments in:
- Advanced air-pollution control systems
- State-of-the-art air-handling and filtration technologies
- Engineered process controls throughout the recycling workflow
These systems effectively manage emissions, maintain clean working environments, and ensure compliance with all environmental regulations governing our facility.

Safety-first culture
Employee safety is fundamental to our operations. All employees are required to complete annual safety and first-aid training and are trained in the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), including:
- Respiratory protection
- Safety glasses and face shields
- Gloves and fire-retardant clothing
- Hearing protection and additional task-specific PPE
A trained first-aid team is always on-site to respond quickly to any incident.

Independent inspections and continuous improvement
To maintain the highest standards of safety and compliance, all critical systems are inspected multiple times each year by independent third parties. These inspections include:
- Employee protective equipment
- Emergency response systems
- Chemical storage and handling
- Machine guarding
- Fire alarms, extinguishers, and sprinkler systems
This proactive approach ensures continuous improvement and reinforces our commitment to a safe, compliant, and responsible workplace.
