The Sibanye-Stillwater Foundation was founded on the belief that business success and community well-being are inextricably linked.
About the foundation
Since its establishment in 2021, the Sibanye-Stillwater Foundation has contributed meaningfully to the well-being of its beneficiary communities through sustainable, high-impact programmes delivered with philanthropic intent. The Foundation is funded by Sibanye-Stillwater, receiving financial contributions equivalent to 1.5% of dividends declared and paid to shareholders. This funding is in addition to Sibanye-Stillwater’s considerable funding of SLPs in South Africa and other financial contributions for the benefit of its communities, which ensures a continuous and structured approach to development.
While the responsibility for securing a social license to operate rests with Sibanye-Stillwater, the Foundation plays an important role in improving quality of life in our host communities and advancing environmental and social well-being, guided by the diverse needs of people living across our host regions.
The Foundation’s strategic priorities align directly with several key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We understand the complexity and magnitude of these challenges; our approach has been fundamentally collaborative, shaped by ongoing input from the communities we serve.

To deliver programmes with a global sustainability mandate guided by rigorous Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles.

To become an integral part of the communities and organisations it supports, enriching beneficiaries’ experiences through impactful initiatives.

To create and promote public benefit activities, with a strong emphasis on sustainability principles, social upliftment, and sustainable development
A closer look
The Sibanye-Stillwater Foundation’s strategic goals are rooted in our commitment to public benefit activities that promote sustainable development and uplift the communities we serve. By focusing on key areas of social, economic, and environmental impact, we aim to create meaningful and lasting change.
Conservation and environment
Promote and support initiatives that foster climate resilience, promote clean energy, and facilitate environmental rehabilitation. This includes alternative energy programmes, biodiversity management, land rehabilitation, and the protection of natural resources.
Healthcare
Improve healthcare access and infrastructure. Implement programmes focused on reproductive health, gender-based violence support, and disease management, particularly for tuberculosis, HIV, and home-based care.
Education and skills development
Enhance educational opportunities by providing school infrastructure, equipment, and academic support for learners and teachers.
Welfare and humanitarian
Provide social relief programmes in response to climate-related disasters; promote entrepreneurship through incubation programmes for youth and emerging businesses; support initiatives that empower communities through skills development; hunger alleviation programmes.
The promotion of access to media
Expand digital access by funding ICT equipment, connectivity programmes for social facilities, and digital solutions for local municipalities.
Sports
Invest in sports infrastructure, equipment, and tournaments to encourage community participation and youth development in sports.
Infrastructure
Support essential infrastructure projects, including road construction, social welfare facilities such as old age homes and orphanages, and water, sanitation, and waste management systems.
Culture
Promote arts and culture by funding and curating artistic and cultural events that celebrate heritage and creativity.
To achieve these goals and further our public benefit initiatives, the Foundation actively seeks and responsibly utilises financial resources, including distributions, donations, bequests, grants, funding, and awards. These funds, along with the proceeds from investments, are directed toward implementing our strategic initiatives.
The Foundation’s operations and governance are strictly aligned with our stated objectives, ensuring that all activities remain focused on delivering sustainable and impactful community development.
The Sibanye-Stillwater Foundation’s Board of Directors comprises seven members nominated by Sibanye-Stillwater and appointed by its existing Board.
Through strategic partnerships, the Sibanye-Stillwater Foundation has successfully implemented projects that improve healthcare access, enhance educational outcomes, support skills development, uplift vulnerable communities, promote environmental conservation, and drive infrastructure development.
The Foundation’s regional spend reflects our sustainability commitment—driving health, education, and economic resilience where it matters most.
