The City Board of Kokkola decided on 18 July 2022 to apply for leave of appeal with the Supreme Administrative Court and to appeal the decision of the Vaasa Administrative Court, made on 22 June 2022, which rejected Kokkola City Council’s zoning approval decision concerning the partial master plan for the Länttä mining area, located in Ullava, Kokkola. Kokkola City Council approved the zoning on 25 March 2021, but one appeal was lodged against the decision.

The City of Kokkola justifies the appeal with the following reasons, among others: the decision by the Vaasa Administrative Court does not specify how the zoning would be unlawful. The City also notes that their zoning approval was made in compliance with the regulations of the Land Use and Building Act, and nothing in the approval is unlawful.

Mining activities in Länttä will not begin until the 2030s. Keliber has a valid environmental permit and a mining permit for Länttä. The environmental permit will be updated before the start of operations in Länttä.
